Why Duke Nukem Forever is taking forever

3D Realms have been developing Duke Nukem Forever for what seems like an eternity. In the same period of time that this project has been underway, most of their competitors have released multiple titles. So where exactly is this elusive game and why is it taking so long? It's hard to be sure, but in this rant I offer a couple of educated guesses.
